Teams at the Royal Surrey in Guildford have won an award for the best Covid-19 technology solution. The solution was to bring in smartphones with two-way video consultation software that allowed just one ICU doctor to examine a patient, then link to colleagues who were sat remotely for the ward round. The phones were rolled out across the 14 wards, allowing relatives and friends to book virtual visits with loved ones while Covid-19 visiting restrictions were in place. Consultant Intensivist and Anaesthetist, Justin Kirk-Bayley, said: The remote ward rounds were slicker, more efficient, and safer and the technology allowed us to recoup some of the time that was lost to Covid-19. ![]() Clinical nurse specialist Claire Richardson said: The Attend Anywhere technology is ideal because it doesn’t retain patient-identifiable information, so patients leave no digital footprint. PATIENTS and doctors will have to adjust to an increasing proportion of consultations being carried out remotely as the NHS tries to cut carbon emissions, according to a top medic. Mike McKirdy, a breast cancer surgeon who is set to take over as president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow (RCSPG) in December, said the "pushback" against holding more appointments via video and telephone - especially in primary care - was "misplaced". The report reviews 3 million NHS England secondary care video consultations over a year in one of the fastest roll-outs of a single technology in the NHS’s history. The report highlights the benefits of video consultations to patients – saving over the year a total of 4.64 million hours (530 years) inpatient travel and in-hospital waiting times and £40m in travel costs and parking charges. As a result, 3 million lost work hours were avoided saving the overall economy £108m in lost productivity. The report estimates fewer journeys to the hospital resulted in 14,200 tonnes of avoided greenhouse gas emissions, and 11 million fewer “single-use” PPE items, such as face masks, were consumed, saving the NHS over £1.1 million. The analysis also found that 1,730 hospital-acquired infections were avoided (not including COVID-19 infections) due to fewer visits to hospital sites. A review of the NHS Wales Video Consulting Service, using Attend Anywhere, has found to be a hit with the people in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan with more than 90% of 22,000 survey recipients confirming they would use video consulting again in the future. Respondents mentioned reduced infection risk, improved convenience, savings on travel and parking as the main benefits. Dr Allan Wardhaugh, Chief Clinical Information Officer at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: We have seen them become a popular, convenient option for patients to attend their hospital appointments flexibly. This mixed methods evaluation was commissioned in mid-2019 and extended to cover the pandemic response in 2020. The national-level groundwork before the pandemic allowed many services to rapidly extend the use of video consultations during the pandemic, supported by a strong strategic vision, a well-resourced quality improvement model, dependable technology, and multiple opportunities for staff to try out the video option. Scotland provides an important national case study from which other countries may learn. ![]() Source: Copyright: Diego Vicente; License: Licensed by JMIR Read the Journal of Medical Internet Research case study here:

Induction Healthcare’s acquisition of Attend Anywhere brings together a suite of widely used technologies and integrated care systems
London, 13 July, 2021 - Induction Healthcare, a leading virtual care platform driving digital transformation of healthcare systems worldwide, has acquired Attend Anywhere Pty Ltd, the award-winning video consultation system purpose-built for healthcare and used by 90% of NHS Trusts throughout the UK. The acquisition creates a well-resourced, UK listed technology provider, focused on helping healthcare systems deliver more flexible care options for patients and staff. The transaction provides NHS services that already use both companies’ technologies with the immediate benefit of improved UK based services and support dedicated to integration projects and partnerships. COVID-19 has forced healthcare systems around the world to accelerate already-underway digital transformation, and the drivers have been particularly strong for healthcare systems that deliver specialty care services. The pandemic placed increased pressure on physical space and resources of hospitals and healthcare practices, forcing rapid rescheduling or cancellation of appointments, adding delays to already strained operating waiting lists, impairing the mobility of patients and their ability to physically attend clinics and impacting the availability of doctors who frequently are required to be in two places at once. The integrated offerings of Attend Anywhere and Induction Healthcare enables a future flexible state for healthcare that allows care or support to be provided in person, over the phone, over video, or asynchronously – with patients and healthcare staff able to work together without having to be in the same room. Attend Anywhere’s solution compliments Induction Healthcare’s existing product suite, including Induction Switch, an app based solution used by over 210,000 NHS doctors to streamline communication with colleagues; Induction Guidance, which allows staff at over 126 NHS Trusts to access controlled treatment information and guidelines irrespective of their location in the hospital (via intranet) or working remotely (via app); and Induction Zesty, a portal used by 280,000 patients to book and access their appointments, read their clinical letters, store a copy of their clinical record and provide data to their care teams remotely. These solutions, brought together and integrated with third party applications and the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) through Induction’s HealthStream integration engine, make a future of flexible care options that build on pre-existing investments in healthcare information technology possible. Chris Ryan, CEO of Attend Anywhere said: “Our union brings together two teams with a common ethos and complementary products and services. It allows Attend Anywhere to accelerate our integration within hospitals and other IT systems and delivers a significant boost to our operational capabilities in the UK and Ireland, as well as expanding opportunities across the globe. While the pandemic saw a rise in the need for remote care, it has long been our clients’ desire to digitise the UK’s healthcare offering. This partnership will help maintain the momentum of change for healthcare systems, which have seen a significant increase in remote consultations, even after local restrictions have been lifted. I am excited to remain actively involved in the business going forward. “ NHS Wales said: "As part of the emergency COVID response, Attend Anywhere supported NHS Wales to rapidly scale video consultations across all Health boards in a variety of Health Care settings. It now forms part of a safe and assured toolkit for patients and clinicians, that allows them to work flexibly and meets their needs to deliver safe and timely care to the people of Wales." Induction solutions enhance the investments hospitals have made and lay the foundation for their future. Our products can enable information share between busy doctors, alleviate operational burdens on hospitals or put patients in better control of their care, all while ensuring the highest standards of clinical safety and information security. We unchain staff and patients from the limitations of paper-based and desktop systems, creating massive time and cost efficiencies. More than 225,000 hospital doctors across multiple territories, including the UK, Ireland, Australia and South Africa, as well as a rapidly growing number of more than 280,000 UK patients, choose Induction solutions. Induction Switch is the number one healthcare collaboration app in the UK, used by the majority of hospital doctors within the NHS. The app helps to increase productivity and enhance communication by securely sharing phone numbers and bleeps, bookmarks, documents and messages in a clinical setting. Induction Guidance provides medical organisations, including most hospital trusts within the NHS, with the ability to collaboratively create, edit, and publish their own local medical guidelines in a secure and locally administrated environment. This increases knowledge of, and adherence to, guidance. Induction Zesty is a market-leading digital platform for patients visiting hospitals. The platform allows patients to book and access their appointments, read their clinical letters, store a copy of their clinical record and provide data to their care teams remotely. It is not just a compelling patient experience, but also delivers significant cost benefits to hospitals. Induction HealthStream is a proprietary data integration platform that reads and writes patient demographic, appointment and clinical record data between a growing number of hospital EHR systems and the Induction platforms. This connectivity between stakeholders and legacy IT systems adds substantial value to pre-existing health IT investment and allows large-scale adoption of Induction app-based services.
