Many of our teams and consultants are seeing the benefits of video consultations or follow-ups over the telephone, and I expect they will become more and more popular as the roll out continues beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.
...Thanks to technology supporting NHS staff to hold appointments on line.
Since 1 April over 5,000 consultations have been held using the service.

Attend anywhere offers a better quality of assessment than telephone conversations. I recently held a consultation with a lady who is over 100 years old and a resident in a care home. The assessment was able to be done quickly and, being in her own environment, helped to reduce her anxiety.

The Attend Anywhere scheme has been trialled at the northerly health centre this year in a bid to cut down on the transport required for people attending pre-operation assessments. The trial has been a success and work on embedding video conference facilities at the health centre on a permanent basis is all but completed.

If you think about how long people in Shetland spend travelling to get to appointments, both within Shetland and off island, if there’s anything we can do that cuts down on those travel times and the inconvenience of being away from home, then it’s absolutely got to be the thing to do.
In the four months between January and April 2019, 80% of haematology patients were seen via video saving around 6.7 tonnes of carbon emissions and 23,000 health miles and £40,000 in patients travel costs.

"NHS Near Me has received this year’s Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Lucian Leape Institute Medtronic Safety and Culture Technology Award for improving patient safety through the successful implementation of technology and culture change.
"To date, NHS Near Me has provided 2,700 video consultations across 31 clinical specialties, which at the current level of usage is saving an estimated 350,000 travel miles a year for patients and clinicians across Highland."
